From Quantum Mechanics Postulate to Landauer’s Erasure Principle
نویسنده
چکیده
Landauer argues that since erasure is a logical function that does not have a single-valued inverse it must be associated with physical irreversibility and therefore require heat dissipation. It is widely accepted that quantum mechanics is our most accurate description of our world. Can Landauer’s erasure principle be deduced by the quantum mechanics if we accept the completeness of quantum theory? It is possible! In microworld, information erasure is an irreversible physics process. The final state of environment is almost completely determined by the initial state of system. In general, a classical limitation of erasure one bit will give heat dissipation of order kBT in environment, corresponding with entropy of environment increasing, of order k ln 2.

The Holevo bound and Landauer’s principle
Landauer’s principle [1] states that the erasure of classical information leads to an increase in the entropy of the environment by at least the same amount. The importance of this principle is the insight that it is not the act of obtaining information that necessarily generates heat and therefore entropy, but the erasure of information. This profound insight has led to the resolution of the p...
متن کاملA note on the Landauer principle in quantum statistical mechanics
The Landauer principle asserts that the energy cost of erasure of one bit of information by the action of a thermal reservoir in equilibrium at temperature T is never less than kBT log 2. We discuss Landauer’s principle for quantum statistical models describing a finite level quantum system S coupled to an infinitely extended thermal reservoirR. Using Araki’s perturbation theory of KMS states a...
متن کاملEaters of the lotus: Landauer’s principle and the return of Maxwell’s demon
Landauer’s principle is the loosely formulated notion that the erasure of n bits of information must always incur a cost of k ln n in thermodynamic entropy. It can be formulated as a precise result in statistical mechanics, but for a restricted class of erasure processes that use a thermodynamically irreversible phase space expansion, which is the real origin of the law’s entropy cost and whose...
متن کاملInformation Erasure and the Generalized Second Law of Black Hole Thermodynamics
We consider the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics in the light of quantum information theory, in particular information erasure and Landauer’s principle (namely, that erasure of information produces at least the equivalent amount of entropy). A small quantum system outside a black hole in the Hartle-Hawking state is studied, and the quantum system comes into thermal equilibriu...
متن کاملThe physics of forgetting: Landauer’s erasure principle and information theory
This article discusses the concept of information and its intimate relationship with physics. After an introduction of all the necessary quantum mechanical and information theoretical concepts we analyse Landauer’ s principle which states that the erasure of information is inevitably accompanied by the generation of heat. We employ this principle to rederive a number of results in classical and...
